VI. Course Description: Develops college writing and reading strategies. Reviews sentence and paragraph structure as part of the development of essays. Emphasizes revision techniques for essay and critical reading in academic texts.
VII. Prerequisites: None
VIII. Instructional Goals:
Teaches students to successfully write well-organized paragraphs that conform to Standard American English and to understand the development of multi-paragraph essays. Prepares students for PRPE A108 and/or ENGL A109.
IX. Student Outcomes: Upon completion of Writing Strategies the student will have successfully demonstrated the ability to:
1.
Write well-developed, coherent paragraphs and short essays to respond to specific rhetorical contexts.
2.
Revise and edit drafts to develop ideas and improve the focus and clarity of writings.
3.
Use metacognitive strategies to enhance critical reading and comprehension of academic texts.
4.
Employ available resources to improve writing.
The student will have gained the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in College Writing
X. Class Participation: Students are expected to ask relevant questions, read the material assigned, complete homework and write papers. The assignments must be turned in on time for full credit.
XI. Students Attendance: Online class attendance is expected by regularly submitting homework and writing assignments. It is your responsibility to withdraw from the class if it is not working out for you. If you do not withdraw and fail to complete work in a timely manner, a grade of “F” will be assigned.
**If you plan on taking the class seriously as part of your college accomplishments, please step up and do the work and do your best. This is your reputation as a student that is being compromised if you do not.
XII. Required Written Work: Reading and writing assignments can be found on the course website and students are expected to submit all assignments prior to, or on the day they are due.
Turning in Homework
Written coursework assignments can be found on the chronological outline below. Late work will result in a grade reduction of 10% per day late. After each assignment assigned on the website, is the due date. You must submit your assignments by 11:59 pm on the due date. WORK SUBMITTED MORE THAN ONE WEEK AFTER THE DUE DATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Please don't ask. Exception: the final paper of the course cannot be late as it is due on the last day of the course.
**Important note: Life happens and situations arise which makes it difficult...or even impossible to get work in on time. If you let me know before or during the tough times, I am more than happy to help you in any way I can. If you wait until weeks after things are due and then let me know about some difficulty in your life, I will not be as agreeable to help you. Sound fair?
I do not accept work sent as an attachment (i.e. a Word or pdf document) or as a Google Doc. It must only be sent as an email with the subject line titled with the lesson number and your last name. For example, if I were turning in lesson 3.4, I would put "3.4, your last name" in the subject line. Anyone not doing their work in this way will have work returned to correct the problem.
XIII. Audit Policy: There are no requirements for auditing this class.
XIV. Plagiarism: As described in KPC’s Student Code of Conduct, cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited and subject to University disciplinary actions. Violations include, but are not limited to: presenting ideas or works of another person as the student’s own without proper acknowledgement of sources, using unauthorized materials or devices during an assignment or exam, receiving or providing unauthorized assistance during an assignment or exam, or offering remuneration for a grade. The full UAA student code of conduct can be found at the following link: https://www.uaa.alaska.edu/students/dean-of-students/student-conduct/code.cshtml
