Assignment 4.2

Read pp 72-74 on transitions between paragraphs.
At this point in your 5 paragraph paper on being scared, you have 5 paragraphs, but they do not as of yet, flow into one another.  This is the next step.  To finish your 5 paragraph paper on “being scared”, you need to insert transitional phrases after the second and third paragraphs.  These transitional phrases give a smooth transition between each paragraph since they “slide” you into the next paragraph.  With no transitions, the paper is choppy and pieced together.

If you need help with ideas for "transitional words", you can click on the button below for some suggestions.

Transitional Phrases

The reasons the transitional phrases are only after the second and third paragraphs are:
No need after the intro paragraph since the thesis and essay map lead the reader into the second paragraph
No need after the fourth paragraph since you are concluding in the fifth paragraph and not introducing anything new in this fifth paragraph

So, let’s put the entire paper on “being scared” together by inserting some transitional statements between paragraphs two and three and submitting the paper in its entirety.
(30 minutes)

**Remember:  the term is "transition phrase" not "transition word".  This means, the words at the link above give you words to START the transition.  You must write a sentence that brings the two paragraphs together using one of the transition words to get you started.

I would like you to take notes over this section.  This section of reading is of incredible importance because over the years I have seen all of these common mistakes in writing happen over and over again.  So, I want to protect each and every one of you from falling into the evil clutches of redundancy, misuse of words, and "crummy" sentences.

Assignment 4.7
Now that you know how to write a complete 5 paragraph paper, we will continue to practice your incredibly handy skill.

For this assignment, I want you to look at the pp 45-47.  There are listed 22 quotes.  I want you to pick one to help you develop a thesis and essay map for a 5 paragraph paper.   Don't just repeat the quote in your thesis as your topic, but use the quote to lead you into a subject you might want to write about.

So, here is what I want:
1.  a thesis statement
2.  an essay map (a sentence with the three points you will be covering
3.  an outline for the paper (remember in the outline to use roman numerals for your three main points (from your essay map) and then use subpoints like (A, B, C) under each roman numeral to let me know how you will be supporting your three main points.  "Click Here" for review on outlines

**Note:  You will not be writing the 5 paragraph paper in its entirety, I just want to keep you practicing the above skills of writing a thesis statement, essay map, and outline.

Read Chapter 9; pp 201-207
Pay special attention to p. 201 middle paragraph starting with “In your writing…”, bottom of p. 205 paragraph starting with “Learning to support, explain, or clarify…”, and p. 206 “Developing Your Essay” (heading)

Notice that under the heading “Developing Your Essay” the book says to write the Exposition paper the same way I explained how to write a 5 paragraph paper.

Assignment 4.8; p. 208;  choose 4 topics from the list 1-19 and write a thesis statement and essay map.  On this assignment, we are going to use only 2 points for the essay map instead of 3 as in a 5 paragraph paper.
