During Class
Discuss pp 210-212
Notice the sample student essay on pp 210-212.
Do you recognize the thesis statement and the
essay map? As you get better at writing these,
they will blend into the paper so that they are not
“in your face” recognizable. For instance, in this
essay the thesis is talking about the benefits of
jogging and gives three points "new surroundings,
positive feeling, and a familiar routine in an unfamiliar
place". The essay map can be found in the last
sentence of the essay on page 210.
Assignment 9.1
From p. 208; take 2 of the 4 topics chosen from assignment 8.4 from Unit #8 and answer the 6 questions on page 210 for each of the 2 topics.
(40 minutes)
Submit Assignment 9.1 (10 pts)
Assignment 9.2
Pick one of the topics of the 2 you chose for assignment 9.1 and prepare to write a 4 paragraph paper by “developing your points by example”. The first thing I would like you to do is make an outline. The outline needs to be as follows:
~~Thesis statement and essay map at top of page
~~Roman Numeral I.--first point you will cover in second paragraph
**A. subpoint (info on example you will use)
**B. subpoint (additional info on the example
**C. subpoint (if needed, additional info on example)
~~Roman Numeral II.--second point you will cover in third paragraph
**A. subpoint (info on example you will use)
**B. subpoint (additional info on the example
**C. subpoint (if needed, additional info on example)
This essay you will be writing uses only 2 points, therefore it will contain an intro paragraph, the first main point as a second paragraph, then the second main point as a third paragraph. The final paragraph (4th) will be the conclusion.
Again...for this assignment, write an outline following the example in purple above.

Assignment 9.3
Now, take the outline you wrote for Assignment 9.2 and write a 4 paragraph paper by “developing your points by example”. This means you have an intro paragraph, 2 paragraphs in the main body, and a concluding paragraph. Remember to use the method taught in the book from your reading (using examples or stories from your personal experience) to support each of your 2 main points) when writing the paper. Remember the rules for each of the paragraphs you learned earlier.
I.
Intro paragraph—attention getter, general to specific, thesis statement, essay map
II.
2 main body paragraphs—topic sentence as the first sentence of each paragraph, examples to support each topic sentence, and a transition sentence either at the end of paragraph 2 or at the beginning of paragraph 3 that will bring the two paragraphs together.
III.
Conclusion paragraph—bringing paper to a close by restating the two points you just discussed and not bringing up any new info.
THE THREE RULES ABOVE WILL WORK FOR ALL PAPERS IN THIS CLASS AS WELL AS EVERY OTHER CLASS YOU WILL EVER TAKE!! DON’T EVER FORGET THE METHOD. SOMEDAY YOU WILL BE SINGING SONGS OF PRAISE TO GARY LEITER FOR FORCING YOU TO LEARN HOW TO WRITE THIS WAY. : )
